Chanel taking new direction: Rocker Dellal confirmed as new face

Recent reports suggested Alice Dellal could be the next face of Chanel handbags, and the French fashion house has now confirmed to WWD that the model/musician will indeed front the Boy Chanel handbag collection's campaign.

Dellal, famed for her half-shaved head and being a drummer in Thrush Metal, can typically be seen wearing ripped jeans, biker jackets and fishnet tights, and it appears her non-conformist approach to style has inspired Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld, who has created a handbag line rebelling against traditional ideas of womanliness.

"[Karl Lagerfeld] had a crush on this unique, charismatic young lady, who is both a model and musician, during a photo shoot several months ago," Chanel told WWD.

"This previously unforeseen alliance finally became self-evident. Alice Dellal represents the perfect incarnation of all that is unique about the Boy Chanel handbag collection, which strives [to be] far from conformist notions of femininity."

The fashion house revealed an exclusive behind-the-scenes shot from the campaign to WWD, where Dellal can be seen holding a gray quilted handbag from the line.

The campaign will be released internationally in March, and signals the increasingly edgy aesthetic favored by Lagerfeld, with Dellal sporting braids and heavy black eyeliner similar to the looks seen at the designer's Métiers D'Art fashion show earlier this month.

Dellal, whose sister is the founder of footwear label Charlotte Olympia, has previously fronted campaigns for Spanish high street retailer Mango as well as risqué lingerie brand Agent Provocateur.
